Super Mario Valentine’s Day Box + Treat Toppers Printable

Long gone are the days of shoe box Valentine’s card boxes. Lucky for me, I love crafting, so I actually enjoy putting together fun boxes with Aden for his school parties.

Last year, we were just moving into our new house and things were busy as ever! We needed to create a box that required little time, little effort, and not a ton of supplies (who knows where the craft stuff was hiding among moving boxes!)

Sooo we decided to do a Super Mario Mystery Box. This wasn’t our first Super Mario Valentine’s mailbox, (check out our Piranha Plant from a couple years ago here!) but it was the most simple.

Forgive me for the poor phone picture quality – the lighting was awful that day & I wasn’t planning on posting at the time…

Supplies:

Square Box

Black Paint (& paint brush)

Glue or Modpodge

Lollipop Sticks (or a straw, pipe cleaner, pencil, etc)

4 Copies of the Question Mark (printable download at the bottom of the post)

2 Copies of the Coin (printable download at the bottom of the post)

Yellow Scrap Book Paper

What to do:

1. Paint the square box black. You don’t have to worry too much about the middle of the box sides – just mostly around the edges.

2. After it’s dry, glue or mod podge on the question mark squares. Or in my case – because our box was big – I glued on yellow scrap book paper squares to the 4 sides. Then I cut out the question mark itself & the circles in the corners and glued them on individually.

3. Glue or modpodge a piece of yellow paper onto the top of the box. You could also use paint instead of paper for the top and/or the sides, but paper was easier for me this time.

4. Carefully cut an opening in the top of the box for Valentines to be put in. I just used a knife… it wasn’t super pretty, but it worked.

5. Cut out the 2 copies of the coin. Attach them to the top half of the lollipop stick – I just turned one coin upside down, put the lollipop stick down the middle, added some glue, and then topped it with the other coin image.

6. Using a sharp tool (maybe a screw driver or even a pen), create a small hole in the top of the box – big enough for the lollipop stick to fit but small enough for it to be a snug fit.

7. Wiggle the lollipop stick into the hole. If the hole is too big or if it seems not to be sturdy, you can add some hot glue or regular glue around the hole to keep it in there.

That’s it! Truly, that’s really all I did. It was super easy and didn’t take a ton of time. There’s so many ways you could recreate it though & just using basic craft supplies around the house.

Anyway, after making the box, we needed some Valentines! We decided to just do little treat bags instead of traditional Valentine cards. I hopped on the computer and created some treat toppers in the same Super Mario theme…

The treat bags ended up being a big hit. Aden loved them & so did his class. I did get them printed at Office Depot on cardstock (they were 50 cents a sheet), but they could definitely be printed at home!

The PDF file I used is available for free download below, along with the box images. The treat toppers are 5″ x 5″ squares & there are 2 per page for printing. They can easily be sized down for smaller bags, or just trimmed after printing.
